Dumpster Diving for e-Data
"Dumpster Diving" used to involve people digging through trash dumpsters with the intention of discovering valuable paper records with confidential mission-critical data or customer information; this practice is still ongoing today, albeit with USB flash drives, mp3 players, and old laptops.
Because anyone who throws away (or, for that matter, loses) a USB flash drive, mp3 player, or old computer could unwittingly leak confidential information, most, if not all, security experts recommend encrypting these devices in order to protect the sensitive data — whether the data is at rest on a hard drive or being actively transmitted over a network.
