Data Encryption Software For Smart Water Meters?

Venturebeat.com has an article on how smart water meters are easily hackable because they don't have any security in place.  Apparently, these devices can be easily secured via the use of encryption or even spectrum hopping but smart meter manufacturers haven't done so because of increased costs.

This lack of security means potential problems.  Some of the ones highlighted include:

  • Reduced water (utility) bills by hacking the sensors
  • Increased water bills for neighbors (because the hacker doesn't like them)
  • Evasion of water restrictions and other forms of quotas
  • Surveillance of presence and activity (via water usage / non-usage)

All in all, it's an interesting read, and highlights the importance of data security in pretty much any device where data is collected.
